Newnan, GA…..January 24, 2011 ….. Michael P Gruber, MD of Georgia Bone and Joint in Newnan and Peachtree City/Fayetteville, has qualified for a Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

To be awarded a CAQ, a surgeon must complete a rigorous process, including a review of his practice and an examination which covers the medical and musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine offered by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS serves as the certifying board for orthopaedic surgeons in the United States. To qualify to take the exam, an orthopaedic surgeon must show significant sports medicine experience through a comprehensive analysis of his practice.

Dr. Gruber’s practice at Georgia Bone and Joint is primarily focused on treatment of sports or activity related injuries, including knee, shoulder, and other joints, as well as adult reconstructive surgery (joint replacement) of the hip and knee. Dr. Gruber is on staff at Piedmont Newnan and Piedmont Fayette Hospitals, as well as the Summit Surgery Center. He serves as a volunteer team physician to the local sports teams at area high schools and is a member of the Summit YMCA Board. He is actively involved in medical education as a preceptor for the Mercer University Physician Assistant program and is a volunteer physician for the Coweta Samaritan Clinic.

Dr. Gruber received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency training at Wake Forest University, where he served as a team physician to university and professional athletes. He has enjoyed providing the same level of care to athletes and non-athletes in our area for the past 17 years. Dr. Gruber’s group practice, Georgia Bone and Joint, offers a full range of orthopaedic care, including sports medicine, joint replacement, workers’ compensation, foot care, and outpatient surgery.
